To cross the Canal grande, there was first a boat bridge and you only had to separate two of them to let boats go through. 

It was replaced by a wooden drawbridge around 1200.

Burnt, collapsed, several times rebuilt, in 1557 it threatens to fall down and venice finally decides to built a stone bridge. 

Da Ponte’s project is chosen, to the detriment of Michel Angelo’s. it was inaugurated in 1591.
